Hot Stone Massage Vancouver :
A time honoured treatment

Hot stone massage has been used for thousands of years by cultures all over the world.  It became popularized in the 1990s by massage therapist, Mary Nelson, who standardized a method of treatment known as “LaStone Therapy” which is now a common and highly sought after spa therapy.  The core practice, however, of using hot stones to relax the body and support deep healing is a time honoured tradition.  Come experience the beneftis of this ancient therapy!

What is a Vancouver Hot Stone Massage?

At our Vancouver Massage Practice, our Registered Massage Therapist, Kathleen, expertly incorporates hot stone therapy into her treatment sessions.  The smooth basalt stones – chosen specifically for their ability to retain heat – are warmed to a safe, therapeutic temperature and used both as placement tools and as extensions of the therapist’s hands.

Vancouver massage using hot stones is not about “placing stones everywhere.” Rather, it is about strategic heat application to specific tissues, joints, and holding patterns that are resistant to manual pressure alone.

When done well, hot stone massage feels deeply grounding, enveloping, and sedative to the nervous system, without requiring aggressive pressure.  This treatment is particularly supportive for ongoing neck, shoulder, and occipital tension, while also promoting circulation, calming the nervous system, and encouraging overall relaxation of both body and mind. Each therapeutic session is assessed and tailored to individual needs.

At Doctors' Choice Naturopathic Vancouver, we use time-honoured treatments to inspire and nourish our patients.

How does hot stone massage

differ from regular massage?

At Doctors' Choice Naturopathic Vancouver, we inspire and nourish our patients.

We get asked this question a lot!  From an experienced practitioner’s perspective, heat changes everything – it allows the body to release without having to relive the stress stored in tissues.  Physiologically, heat does the following:

This allows healing through vasodilation (increased circulation), decreased muscle spindle activity and increased tissue elasticity.  This means that muscles let go sooner and more completely than they do under hands alone.

With regular massage, you often have to wait for tissue to soften.  With heat, the tissue is already halfway there.

One of the biggest advantages is that hot stones allow access to deeper layers of tissue without increasing pressure.  This reduces guarding and protective tension which means the treatment works more efficiently and sustainably than regular massage.  For clients who are sensitive, highly stressed, or neurologically overloaded, this is invaluable. Depth can be achieved without triggering defense.

This is where hot stone massage truly stands apart.  Heat directly stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-repair.  This rebalancing and regulation of the nervous system often lasts longer than with standard massage

Clients often experience:

  • Slower breathing
  • Decreased mental chatter
  • A sense of “melting” or being held
  • Improved quality of sleep after treatment

This has been shown to be particularly helpful in cases of long-standing neck and shoulder tension, jaw and occipital holding, stress-related headaches or those struggling with burnout and emotional fatigue.

The Benefits of Registered Massage Therapy

At Doctors' Choice Naturopathic Vancouver, we inspire and nourish our patients.

When our patients come for treatment at our Vancouver massage clinic, Doctors’ Choice Integrative, they report numerous benefits including pain relief, improved range of motion, faster healing post surgery or sports injury, a better quality of sleep, a more balanced mood and the list goes on!

Patients often report that they notice improvements within minutes to hours following their Vancouver massage with us.  For chronic health conditions, it may take several treatments before a sustained difference is felt.  Be patient with yourself!  The body heals, but it can take some time – whatever the imbalance is in the body took time to occur thus it may take more than one session for your body to restore it.  Remember, hot stone massage is not doing the healing.  Rather, it is giving your body permission to release what it is holding so that the body can heal itself.

The List goes on…

In addition to those already listed, in our experience, health conditions that benefit from our Vancouver massage treatments include:

  • Migraines & Chronic Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Stiff neck and shoulders
  • Frozen shoulder
  • TMJ
  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Mental Emotional Concerns
  • Anxiety & Depression
  • ADHD
  • Insomnia
